What is “End Game” in EVE?

My current corp is currently active at a different time then I am. They’re all on from midnight to 3AM EDT, and I’m on in the evening. Because of this, I’ve been thinking about moving on. I haven’t yet because I haven’t decided what I want to do. I figured I’d write a post on the different end games that I see in EVE since I’ve been thinking about them. I’ll probably miss some facets of the game as I’ve never partaken in them.

The classic end game is to go live out in 0.0 (lawless space). One has the opportunity to access the best rats (NPC ships in asteroid belts), the best plexes (like dungeons in space), hidden plexes, and mining. One can manufacture without restriction out in 0.0. If you’re into PvP (and even if you’re not), you’ll probably be expected to participate in fleet battles, gate camps, and roaming gangs to protect the territory.

If you run missions, the end game would be to run level 5 missions solo. All of these are out in low sec, so one has to be alert for pirates. The money and awards for these missions is pretty high, but I imagine the mission hubs are probably swarming with pirates.

If you are into building things, I imagine the end game is to be able to build capital ships. This is costly and the skills to build them are time consuming to train. There are whole corporations who do this for a living. The ships have to be built in either lo-sec or 0.0 space, so it can be dangerous and usually requires a team.

For miners, high end ores are the holy grail. You find these either in good 0.0 space, or in wormholes. I can’t imagine that this is a fun end game as it only takes a few months to get to this point. If I were a miner, I’d probably want to move on to manufacturing or something to add some fun.

If you run missions and have some science skills, you could do some research and invention for tech 2 blueprints. You could then pass them off to an industry type to build tech 2 items and ships. Another option is to exploit wormholes and build tech 3 ships and components. Again, the actual manufacturing has to happen in 0.0 or in a wormhole, so it can be dangerous.

If you’re into leading people, maybe managing an alliance is the end game for you. If you’re into the shady side of the game, you can manufacture and sell drugs (boosters). You could also shoot for the biggest scam in the universe if you’re into that.

I’m sure pirates have an end game, but I don’t know what it is. I’m also sure that I’ve missed a lot of professions which have a clear end game. I’ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to go find them.
